The town has a pretty waterfront area on the west side of Little Lake Harris with lakefront homes overlooking Little Lake Harris. The town's founder, William J. Howey, started buying Lake County Land in 1914. By 1920 he had amassed about 60,000 raw acres for his "City Inevitable". The Florida Land Boom tripled Howey's enterprises and the City was incorporated in on May 8th 1925. The Florida legislature officially changed the name to Howey-in-the-Hills on May 13, 1927 to reflect the beauty of the lakes and hills which Bill Howey touted as the "Alps of Florida".
The current population of Howey is about 1,300 residents. Today's Howey-in-the-Hills is a quiet area of residential homes with tree lined streets and scenic waterfront views. Howey seems to have escaped the building frenzy of 2005-6 and remains basically as it was 30 years ago. If you like knowing your neighbors, riding a bike down a quiet street or along a big lake, you'll love Howey-in-the-Hills. Homes range from the $100,000s to near $Million for a large lakefront estate. Waterfront home prices in Howey-in-the-Hills average slightly less than in nearby Mount Dora.
Howey-in-the-Hills is the location of the famous Mission Inn Resort and Club. This large County Club and Resort has two championship golf courses, a full time tennis pro and lots of social activities for it's upscale members.
